Wow, it's the end of February already. Fortunately for my area, we had it pretty goes on the weather front. More often than not, our temperatures were above freezing. I've been spending some of my not reading time watching K-Dramas. They are SO ENTERTAINING! I'm so glad there are tons on Netflix, so much content I get to enjoy! From what I've been watching they also have a lot of eating scenes so now I'm really excited about a restaurant that is opening near me: Korean Hot Pot and BBQ. It's a whole AYCE thing where you cook your meal yourself it looks really delicious.

Here are the books I'll be talking about this week!

For When You Are Looking for A Light and Fluffy Read

 This book is a follow-up to The Ex Hex, it takes place during October, and it has nice Halloween ambiance but as you can see I read it during the dead of winter. This book was a fast read for me, I liked the way the story of Gwyn and Wells is fun and has a nice balance of action/romance and comedy. This is like a well done Hallmark Witchy movie--something the world needs more of- and by world I mean me!

I found myself smiling quite a bit as I read about Gwyn and Wells and the baby witches. Fun Stuff!  My rating is a 4 and here is the blurb from Goodreads:

Nice Start to a New Series- Dead Man's Hand

This name may look very familiar to you. I took a second take the first time I saw this book.  Then I realized this isn't a new book in the Harry Dresden Series, it's a new book by Jim Butcher's son. Like his father, this book is written in the Urban Fantasy AKA the Contemporary Fantasy genre.  I added this book to my library holds weeks ago and as it often the case, a bunch of my holds came in at once. I might not have had time to read this book if I'd gotten the e-book, but fortunately my hold was for the audio version.

The reader for the book is James Patrick Cronin and he does a wonderful job voicing the various characters and bringing the action to life. The story is engaging it has a nice blend of action and exposition.  The main character is a down on his luck witch who works at a place that sounds like Mideval Times Chuck E. Cheese. His name is Grimshaw Griswald Grimsby--what a fun name! 

The book begins with a different POV character, but soon it is clear that this series is going to be about Grimsby's hero's journey.  He is a scrappy young man with low self esteem who as this book goes along pairs up with a grizzled old guy who was sort of like a cop in this world and then you have Wudge who is a troll or maybe a goblin or maybe Wudge is just a a wudge? Anyway you look at it this trio is fun to read about. The plot involved some shady witches trying to get a very powerful item, and all that stands in the way is our intrepid hero and his buddies. 

I can't wait for more!  I love these sorts of stories.  Found families are so delightful to read!

What the Reviews Said, What I thought.

Once again I found myself looking for an audiobook that was included with my Audible membership so I had something to listen to while doing chores. This seems to be a weekend theme for me. This time The husband was off at a golf show, so I had time to putter around the house and listen to this book.

I chose this book because it is narrated by Johanna Parker who voiced the Sookie Stackhouse books and I enjoyed her reading of those books. According to the reviews for this book, some people weren't fans of the audio. 

The beginning of the book is told from Ada's perspective and Ada is a very naive 15-16 year old who has come back home to her horrible abusive father. I was not very into the beginning of the book, I was disappointed that it starts with a clueless girl in the 1920s  with an awful father who needs rescuing.  I considered putting the book down (figurately not literally as I was listening on my phone) and not continuing,  

However, I decided to listen a little longer, and that is when the story switches to the perspective of the other girl in the stilt house, Miranda.  Miranda was a much more interesting character and I enjoyed her backstory. I have not read much fiction taking place in rural areas during the 1920s, which enhanced my reading of this story. 

In the blurbs for this book, The Girls in the Stilt House by Kelly Mustian is compared to Where the Crawdads Sing and apparently many, many reviewers did not agree with this assessment and that affected their enjoyment of the book.  I have not read the Crawdads book, so this comparison meant nothing to me.

No spoilers but I've been on a nice roll of enjoyable books! I hope it continues for a nice long time. How was your week? I'm enjoying a 4-day weekend, I go back to work on Tuesday and I'm bringing paczki. When it's Fat Tuesday, you've gotta have a big jelly-filled donut, right?

Pride and Protest by Nikki Payne

Oh my goodness how beautiful is the cover!  Go ahead and judge this book by its cover because it's as lovely a read as the cover. 

This book is a retelling of Pride and Prejudice which is one of my favorite stories. In this modern retelling, we have Liza the only DJ who gives a Jam--what a great tagline and Dorsey a rich developer. The book is set in DC and has a diverse cast of characters. I loved how Nikki Payne take the character of Lady Catherine De Bourgh and turns her into a him and make him a misogynist Senator. 

Nikki Payne managing to include all the best lines and scenes from the original tale by Jane Austen but puts her own twist on it in such a wonderful way. This book is really a chef's kiss of a retelling.  As I was reading the story there were many times where I had a smile on my face because this is such a fun retelling . Nikki Payne also brings the heat—unlike

the classic tale we know and love, we get sex scenes between Liza and Dorsey. 

5 stars —if you like the original you must read this and if you are not familiar then I think you will enjoy this enemies to

lovers  romance !

 

Tell Her Story - Reading While Cleaning

It was Saturday morning and I was once again looking for a quick book to listen to while I caught up on laundry, so I scrolled through what was free with my audible subscriptions and I came across this book, Tell Her Story.  The book is centered around a former journalist who starts a podcast. 

I said to myself, oh cool, I like podcasts, I'll give this book a listen.

The reader for this story is the actress Dakota Fanning and she does a nice job as the narrator keeping the story going. This book doesn't have many characters so it is easy to keep people straight while you listened and there are many subplots it's a straightforward mystery covering a cold cast that the main character has turned into a podcast.  Now our main character was fired as a journalist because she wrote a story about someone claiming he was a sexual predator and then it turned out she knew it wasn't true.  That makes her hungry for redemption and also maybe we should believe what she says in her podcast. Or should we? 

C/W part of the story involves a high school teacher sleeping with a student. It's not condoned but it is part of the story. 

Without spoiling the story, I will say my response to the end was, hmm, really? If you listen to the book I'd love to know what you think! 
 

A Wish Granted - Bones POV

I won a ecopy of The Other Half of the Grave from Anne's Read-Along! Halfway to the Grave is a very good first book in an Urban Fantasy series so I was excited to re-read the book from Bones' perspective. 

I am sure that over the years Jeaniene Frost has received thousands of requests for a Bones book as he is who is a beloved Vampire in the Urban Fantasy universe.  He is right up there with the Vampires from True Blood and Anne Rice's vamps so it is safe to say that this book was very wanted.

I enjoyed reading the book and knowing all the events of the first book. Since the original book is told from Kat's anti-vampire perspective, it's good to see what was going on in Bones' head while she was projecting upon him her worst fears. 

If you enjoy urban fantasy or vampire romance, I say go read this book if you have already read Halfway to the Grave or get both books and read either one first --or if you are new to the series, I'd love to see what you think of book two after just reading Bones point of view.

4 stars for The Other Half of the Grave it's a solid read.

Are you having or going to a Super Bowl party?  Tell me all about the snacks! We are going to not go anywhere which is usually what we do. I don't really care about the game, I do like the commercials and I do like snacks.  Nothing like a tasty appetizer if you ask me. 

This week brings us Valentine's Day and that means the month will be half over already.  I wonder if we will get a big snow in my area this month, we've had a good amount of cold weather and plenty of days with windchills below zero but not much to speak of when it comes to snow. 

This week I'll be sharing a few books I read or listened to lately:

Looking for someone to listen to while you work or work around the house?

 

It was a Saturday afternoon in January, I had loads of laundry to wash and fold---a sink full of dishes and I didn't feel like listening to music or a podcast.  What to do?  I clicked on my Libby App and scrolled to find an audiobook that was available and looked decent.   

What I found was The Liar's Wife by Kiersten Modglin.  I listened at 2.0 speed and finished the book by dinnertime. It's an easy listen, there aren't a ton of characters so it's easy to keep people straight when you listen to while you work. 

A couple of things that are done in the book that I really liked. The main character Palmer has just given birth and as the book begins you aren't sure if she is dealing with normal post-pregnancy worries and attachment to her new baby or if her husband is truly up to no good. Up until a certain plot point I was not sure if she was a reliable or completely unreliable narrator.  I am not going to tell you which it is, I don't want to spoil you. 

At the very end of the book is a plot twist that you will either love or roll your eyes.  

Mother of the Bride Murder ARC from Net Galley!

If you've read my blog before,  you know I enjoy the Lucy Stone cozy mystery series. I've read many of the books over the last five years and I was delighted that Kensington and Net Galley provided me with an ARC for Mother of the Bride Murder which will be published April 25th. 

I am of the opinion that sometimes you connect with a cozy sleuth and sometimes you don't and that is A-OK.  I connect with Lucy Stone even though I don't always agree with her.  We live in Lucy's head in these books and so we really get to know her thoughts and opinions. After reading many of her adventures, I find that the reason I will read this series as long as Leslie Meier writes them is that Lucy and the Tinker Cove crew feel like real people. They are written with depth and the dialogue sounds just like you might have in your own daily life. 

Reading this book I was worried about Lucy's relationship with Toby more than I was about the actual murder. I'm glad that by the end of it, they were in a good place.  However because of what happens, now I'm pretty concerned that Molly is never going to want to move back to Maine.  I miss the days when Molly lived nearby. She's a great daughter-in-law. 

I was also reminded in this book that Elizabeth is my least favorite of the daughters, she always seems to be too interested in wealth. See, the characters are normal everyday middle-class-ish people you probably know. I could write a really long post going on about everything in the book like I was telling you about my neighbor, that's how Lucy feels after you read some of this series.

My rating for this book is 4. It's a good solid book, I liked that much of the drama involving the Stone family could have been avoided if Marie and Hugo had been upfront with their guests. I do prefer when the whole book takes place in Tinker's Cove. 

If you haven't read any of this series, you can read this book, you don't have to know all about the other books. 

My Sister's Grave by Robert Dugoni

Looking for a listen for your commute, or while you are cleaning the house, or walking the dog?  My Sister's Grave by Robert Dugoni is the first book in a series. The story is one you've likely heard before, Tracy the main character becomes a detective after her sister disappears and works for years to try and find out more about the case. In this instance her sister's body was never found and even though a man (who had been recently released from prison for rape prior to her sister's disappearance) was tried and convicted; Tracy doesn't think the evidence adds up. 

When the sister's body was found, then Tracy has an excuse to try and revisit the case. The sheriff in the small town tries to stop her from doing it. 

If you like courtroom drama and police procedurals you may enjoy this book and the rest of the series. I picked it up because it was on the top of the list of free with membership thrillers. I thought it was decent but I was left at the end thinking most of what happens in this book could have been avoided if some people hadn't decided other people needed protecting. 

Overall, it was a pretty good book and if you listen or read it and you like Tracy, the good news is that there are a bunch more books and I imagine moving forward they are cases she wasn't intimately involved with and that may lead to better twists and turns!

Wanna Know a Fun Fact?

 

If you are a person who likes a good fun fact or likes to play trivia games this is a book you might just want to pick up. It was included with my Audible subscription and as I mentioned, I have a goal to read at least one non-fiction book per month, so here we are this is my February Non-Fiction book!

I listened to this book and what is nice about it is that basically, it's a long list of historical facts, most of which people don't readily know.  Frankly, and I mean this in the nicest way, this is a good bathroom book. 

It covers a lot of historical facts from America and England. I definitely didn't know most of the information related to England. 

When it comes to major historical events, in almost every case, a slight change could have made a huge difference. This book is filled with all the if not for X, X would not have happened. 

Case in point, the title of the book, Napoleon was having a bad morning due to hemorrhoids and didn't get on the battlefield in a timely manner and the battle was lost. 

Or that President Kennedy was wearing a back brace that keep him upright and like contributed to his death. Or that the Eiffel Tower was supposed to be torn down after it was up for 20 years, and the only reason it was kept up was that it had a radio transmitter. 

4 Stars this book is easy to read and is packed with interesting facts about history. 

The Serpent in Heaven by Charlaine Harris

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

When I heard that the next book in the Gunnie Rose series was going to be about Felicia, I was delighted because that meant Lizbeth got to keep her HEA with Eli, and all of us readers got to read more in this world.  

This book was on the shorter side, I devoured it, I really enjoy Felicia and her inner monologue. She is clever and I felt that as written she acted her age. I think Charlaine got this unusual teenager's thoughts correct. The reveals as the mystery goes along works and the unveiling of Felicia's background and her abilities as a mage seem reasonable. The blurg says that only her courage will keep her alive, but I disagree, I say it's her cunning and her years of experience living on the edge in Mexico that keep her alive. 

The support cast is pretty big in this first book of Felicia's but if you have read other books in the series it's easy to keep them straight. It may be more difficult if you start the books with this one. The ending is satisfying, we get resolution to the immediate troubles of the day as well as a better understand of Felicia and her extended family. Threads are there for other books and I look forward to spending time with her again.

Final book in my #SIAM Wicked All Night By Jeaniene Frost

 

January is almost over and I am ending the month with the third and final book in the Night Rebel series. I'm happy to report, yes I can read a series in a month! (#SIAM) 

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!

Like book two, I did the audio version of the book and if you ask me to rate the narration I give it a 5, I think Talia Gilbert does a wonderful job with all the different voices and accents. 

As far as I know, this book wraps up Ian and Veritas/Ariel. This book was a fast listen and again we get scenes with other characters from the Night Huntress Universe.

Overall this three-book series would have worked better for me if Veritas had been in stasis for a larger portion of her life. I say this because she says she is nearly 5,000 years old. I had a very hard time reconciling her age and experience with her behaviors and lack of knowledge. She is very gullible. Good thing her dad kept raising her from the dead. You can say it's due to her first time experiencing love with Ian, but that falls flat for me. Now if she'd been in a coma for like 4,800 of the years, then it makes much more sense to me. 

I like her brother, he came in clutch in the series, because unlike Veritas and other characters, he is able to read people (people and supernatural characters). Marie the Queen of the Ghouls also continues to be an excellent character. 

Okay, I'm going to leave the review on that positive note!

We are on the cusp of February. How was your January? We have a few days left if there is anything you'd like to do to button up your month or end it with a bang! Tomorrow I get to attend a cooking demo at my local library. The cooking demos always fill up fast so I set a reminder earlier this month so I didn't forget to register the moment registration opened. 

Later today the last post for the #SIAM will be posting it's the final book in the Night Rebel series Wicked All Night.  I enjoy participating in these #SIAM a trilogy of three books is really manageable for me!

Peace Talks Book 16 in the Harry Dresden Files

You wanna see magic in our mundane world? Look no further than the wizard that is Jim Butcher. Sixteen books into the series and I'm still excited to see what happens next. I'm still worried about all my fictional friends making it through the night. This book doesn't resolve some big problems happening in Harry's world, but it does give me the emotional growth I've been waiting for out of Harry. 

This book is chockful of the supernatural, but it takes place in Chicago and all my favorite characters are included which I really prefer over the books that have been centered in Faerie. One of the reasons I so enjoy this series is because humans are right in the thick of it the stories and that we see wizards, vampires, werewolves, etc. are injured and even die. There are consequences even in the midst of magical powers. 

If I had read this when it came out, I'd be so bummed that when I finished it I needed to  wait for Battle Ground  to be published--but lucky for me, and for you if you are reading the series now we can read it right away!

The Devil Downtown by Joanna Schupe

I picked up this book because it was my book club's January selection. I have heard many great things about Joanna Shupe's writing so I was happy to have a push to read one of her books. This is a historical romance as you can see from the swoony cover. 

NOTE: I don't mind the cartoony romance covers that are currently popular, but as someone raised on Johanna Lindsey, this cover worked for me. 

This book is the third book in the Uptown Girls series, in it we get some scenes with Justine (our MC) and her sisters who were the main characters in the other two books. You don't need to have read any other books to enjoy this one, but if you like Romance or Historical Romance, you will most likely enjoy the other two books.

This is my first time reading Joanna Shupe's work and I get why she is award-winning.  This book takes place in the 1890s in New York City. Justine comes from a wealthy family but she is an advocate for women and children. A Feminist in the best sense of the word. She tracks down deadbeat dads and tries to get them to support their families. She does this in a system that doesn't think men should have to take care of their own children and who don't see women as equals.  She is a force to be reckoned with in this story.  The male lead is Jack Mulligan, a top-tier rough-around-the-edges character. The main conflict to their becoming a couple is that Jack is a gang leader in NYC. 

I'm not one for gang-related romance, but in the context of late 19th Century New York, it's more tolerable. It's clear throughout the book that if Justine and Jack are to find a HEA together one of them needs to give up their current livelihood. It is obvious which one of them needs to make better choices, the tension throughout the book lies in how we get to the right conclusion, and this is done very well.  

Joanna Schupe makes sure that Justine clearly consents as the romance unfolds, and I loved that while Justine was a virgin, she wasn't ignorant about sex or about pleasuring herself.

If you recall my review of Shades of Wicked from earlier this month, you'll know that the main character Veritas was not my favorite. I liked her in earlier books, but this series is told from her POVmaking her the main focal point of the books. Overall book one in the Night Rebel series was a 3 for me. 

SPOILERS AHEAD-

Wicked Bite wasn't available to borrow from my library in any form, and I didn't want to buy a kindle or paperback copy, so I used an audible credit to listen to the book. The reader for this book and the Night Huntress series is Tavia Gilbert. I like her interpretation of the accents for this book series and I think listening to her act out the book as opposed to me reading it did enhance my enjoyment of the book. 

This book being the second in the three book series, was all about managing expectations. There would be some things resolved but also there would be cliffhangers and I reminded myself--Dagon isn't going to die--he is going to keep popping up. 

What I liked about the book:

1. Action packed plot.

2. Veritas/Ariel has a family member--I'm hoping he is decent part of book three.

3. Veritas/Ariel accepts her dual nature. Thank goodness!

What is not my favorite: 

A secret betrothal.

Also the characters keep almost getting killed because they are being foolish, either by not questioning what they are being told or not listening to themselves. If at some point someone said: "We should stop relying on our physical prowess and magical abilities and start using our brains more then we'd stop getting into so many dire situations." Then I'd be super happy! 

What I'd love to read:

Veritas and Ian go on vacation and Ashael is dog sitting Silver who meets another demon dog at the dog park!

I hope you are having a nice January so far, on the weather front, we've had a mild January with very little snow,but we did get a bunch of rain on Wednesday.  It was the kind of rain that makes me grumble and say, "too bad this isn't snow, snow is less wet." 

This month I'm working on cleaning drawers, cabinets, and closets. I highly recommend spending a little time when you can go through the stuff you own to see what you want to keep and what you can get rid of, when you free up space it feels so good!  Speaking of that I need to update my Bookish resolutions to include reading one or two books off my bookshelf each month and then giving away those books. I have quite a few books on my bookshelf that are watching me download ebook after ebook while they collect dust!

You pick what you are resolved to do in 2023 as far as books go.  Here are the rules that Berls and Michelle put together:

Rules:

1. Create between 5 or more resolutions related to books/book blogging/writing (there are examples below but you can make up your own)(you can have as many resolutions as you would like, there is no limit) 
2. Create a signup post and add it to the Linky on this post (sign up before Feb 28th)
3. Since this is a year-long challenge we ask that you pick goals with some longevity. Pick a goal that will take you no less than 6 months to complete.
4. Once your goals are set you cannot change them.
5. Three times a year we will have an update to see how you are doing. March 1st, June 1st, and September 1st. The last update will be the wrap-up post.
6. For each goal you complete, you get one entry into the giveaway that will be in our wrap-up post on December 31, 2023

 I've tried to make my goals for the year simple for me so that I am able to stay on track. 

Resolution  1:  Read/Listen to one non-fiction book each month (this is done for January, yay!) 

Resolution 2:   Read 60 books in 2023

Resolution 3:  Read and review 1-2 Netgalley books each month

Resolution 4:  Post all my reviews on Goodreads, not just here--

Resolution 5: Go to at least one book signing in 2023 (In Person) 

Okay that's all I am ready to hold myself accountable for 2023. I think these resolutions are manageable and fun-

Pies and Prejudice This Month's Cozy Mystery Book Club

 

I really, really enjoyed Ellery Adams' Secret, Book and Scone society. This series is an earlier series by the same author, Pies and Prejudice is the first book in that series. I picked up this book to read because it's the January 2023 selection for the Cozy Mystery Book Club.

I listened to the audio version of this book. I stumbled a little in my listening because a few southern accents seemed very over the top to me, I don't know if that was on purpose or not.  The mystery and the whodoneit of this book are good.  The pie-baking talk is nice and if you enjoy a slueth who actively tries to figure out the murder, this book fits that bill. 

The book includes a high school nemesis and for me, that is a trope I don't enjoy.  Our MC has moved back to Georgia after she catches her husband of 7-years cheating. She was in New York City during her marriage and during that time she didn't speak to her mother at all. This really didn't make sense to me throughout the book. She doesn't speak to her mom for 7 ye but comes home with just the clothes on her back and her dog when she catches her husband in flagrant delicato with not one but two women, but her mom redoes a place for her to stay and her mom and her aunts fun a business for her --the Charmed Pie Shoppe. The text for me didn't make it clear why she and her mom wouldn't have spoken. There isn't a big enough riff. 

The book has light magical realism and is pretty standard cozy until the very end. The book ends with reveals that move it from magical realism to contemporary fantasy. Depending on how large a part magical beings play in book two, this may or may not appeal to you. Will I read the next book in this series?  First I need to read the rest of the books in the Secret, Book and Scone Society series because I loved the first book and want to return to Miracle Springs, NC. Once I have caught up on that series, I plan to check out the synopses for the second book in this series in order to decide if it's a book I'd enjoy or if I should check out Ellery Adams other series. 

3 Stars for Pies and Prejudice and 5 stars for writer Ellery Adams. 

I'm Almost Completely Caught Up on Everything Ilona Andrews has Published.

 

I look at the Innkeeper Chronicles as being Sci-Fi Cozy Mysteries. On the one hand, I can't believe I read the first book in this series, Clean Sweep, and then didn't continue on--thank goodness I found my way back to this series.  I could read about the goings on at the Gertrude Hunt every day. It is such a great blend of what I like in a cozy mystery series and what I love in paranormal/fantasy all mushed together with Ilona Andrews's wonderful world-building and well-rounded characters. 

On to the reviews of books one and two in the series. In the first book we meet Dina who is an Innkeeper, but not a regular Innkeeper, her BnB caters to aliens from all over the universe. The thing is, no one on Earth can know that aliens travel to and from the earth all the time. Turns out Earth is a hub from which you can travel to many different worlds. Dina's job is to protect her guests and make sure earth people don't know about aliens.  We quickly met Sean and Arland. Sean is a werewolf who was born in the USA but his ancestors are from another planet and we met Arland who is a vampire. Vampires in this series are more like super-powerful humans than your classic vampire can't have kids and drain people to death type. I could go on and on because this story is so expansive, but I don't want to bore or spoil you. 

This series has elements of cozy mysteries in these ways:

1. Overarching mystery regarding the backstory of our MC. Her parents are missing

2. Dina has a cozy companion, her deceptively cute dog.

3. Dina runs a BnB that is historically old and she loves to garden. The Inn has a name- Gertrude Hunt- How Cozy is That~

4. A community of quirky recurring characters. 

5. Light romance 

6. Dina does sleuthing to figure out why various people were killed or how to stop a killing.

My goodness, my library holds are coming up fast! I just got the latest Charlaine Harris book and I've had that on hold for while! I am bumping up this book to the top of my TBR pile.  How about you? Do you plan your reading?  I try to map out a month at a time. If I don't then I find that I don't do a very good job of blogging! 

Last week I was planning a post on the Ilona Andrews Innkeep Chronicles series, but it didn't happen. However, you will see it this week and I have all of next week's posts ready to go! Exciting!  This weekend I get to enjoy a 3 day weekend from working at the school and I am planning to finish and write up reviews for two books.
