Those Empty Eyes- An Engaging Thriller
Sunday, April 17, 2022
I'm so happy this series continued after the initial run.
My only complaint about the final book in this series was that the very end had a flash-forward and I was left really wanting
to know what happened between the end and the flash-forward.
So I'm so pleased that in 2020 Kim Harrison went back to writing about Rachel Morgan. Million Dollar Demon is the second book in the second set of The Hollows. Boy did I enjoy this book. I love that Rachel has become a leader, she has confidence and most importantly she has truly realized she doesn't have to solve or save the world by herself.
If you've read the first 13 books and haven't started this second series now is a great time to catch up as the next book Trouble with the Cursed will be out in June.
If you haven't read any of this series. Go out and get Dead Witch Walking and start on an amazing journey in Contemporary Fantasy!

The book description from GoodReads:
The new master vampire of Cincinnati has arrived . . . and she wants Rachel Morgan out. No matter where Rachel goes, Constance is there--threatening Rachel's allies, causing city-wide chaos, and, to add insult to injury, even forcing Rachel out of her current quarters. Ever since Rachel found a way to save the souls of vampires, the old undead's longtime ascendancy has been broken. Now Constance sees eliminating Rachel as the key to consolidating her own power.
Rachel has no desire to be enthralled or killed--and she's terrified of what may become of the city if Constance forces a return to the ancient ways. But even a witch-born demon can't stand against the old undead--at least, not alone. And if Rachel refuses to claim the role of Cincinnati's master demon, the city will tear itself apart, taking her and all those who stand beside her with it."

Is It Just Me?
I finished a book today, a new release, and my review is below. Next up will likely be "The Diva Runs Out Of Thyme" I'm reading that for the Cozy Mystery Book Club. You can join the book club live stream here
A Forgotten Murder by Jude Deveraux
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is another book I put on hold before the pandemic and don't know why I originally put it on hold! In any case, this was my first experience with a Medlar Mystery by Jude Deveraux. I enjoyed how Ms. Deveraux uses three main POVs in the third person. Because I am currently also reading Dead Land by Sara Paretsky and the character Sara Medlar is a world-famous author in this book, I pictured Sara Paretsky as Sara Medlar while reading.
The English Estate was a nice setting, very Midsommer Murders. I enjoyed that there were multiple mysteries that unfold as you read. As always it is lovely when the baddies get their comeuppance. I have limited patience for long-term will they/won't they, and it looks like Jack and Kate have been dancing around becoming a couple for quite some time. I would hope that in the next book they finally do. I did enjoy their banter.
All in all a good mystery. Would make a nice Netflix film!

Wanna Get Away? Escape Without Leaving Your Lawn Chair!
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This first book left me wanted to spend more time in Charm!
I read this book for Esme Addison 's Facebook Cozy Mystery Book Club. This was my first book from Bree Baker and I enjoyed her writing style. Everly Swan is back in her home town and as tends to happen to our Cozy Mystery heroines, she is quickly accused of possibly murdering someone. How will she clear her name?
Ms. Baker has done a lovely job creating the most magical of islands. I don't know how you could read this book and not want to head out to vacation in Charm. Everly has an interesting back story that I am sure we will learn more about in future books, she also has a family curse. I very much enjoyed the eco-conservation focus in the book. Everly doesn't own a car and she is very good a reusing and repurposing items so she doesn't have to buy more stuff. Her beloved aunts are bee keepers and I hope we get to hear more about that in the next book.
The only point I did not really like, is that to give one character depth and a tragic backstory that character has a spouse who died very young from cancer. Ugh. Can't we just have divorces instead of moms dying of cancer? It just happens too much in my opinion in cozy mystery books and all Hallmark movies. It's the trope I don't like.
Anyway this book is a perfect summer weekend read, esp if you are stuck inside! Travel virtually to Charm and get a nice glass of ice tea from Everly- heck add a little vodka to that tea if you'd like!

Cozy Mystery Online Book Club May Review- Penne Dreadful!
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Good stuff! A very enjoyable read. The pacing is great, we watch the main character grow, and we meet some very interesting supporting characters.
I read this book as part of an online Cozy Mystery Book Club run by the author Esme Addison. It's free to join the group which is on Facebook. Check it out! I was very pleased that this was our book of the month. Tessa is a widow who is trying to navigate her way through tremendous grief. Her sadness is relatable to anyone who has lost a loved one. We get to see her find her way to begin healing as she reassesses her life and her relationship with her husband. Sounds kinda heavy for a Cozy right? But it's not, Catherine Bruns does an amazing job balancing Tessa's loss and all the elements that make Cozies so satisfying. We have an outspoken smart best friend, we have a big bunch of nefarious nare-do-wells, a quaint town in upstate New York and food talk!
Yes, Tessa's secret sauce recipe is in the back of the book! This is one recipe from the back of a book I might actually manage to make myself!
If you are looking for a weekend or a summer read, pick this up today and then pre-order the second book in the series which comes out next month. It Cannoli Be Murder

Looking for a Great Summer Read? Crazy Rich Asians is Perfect!
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I picked this up to read in advance of the movie version coming out in August. Throughout the book there are many references to luxury designers and descriptions of such an opulent lifestyle, I was overwhelmed at times with the conspicuous consumption of it all. Kevin Kwan overwhelms the reader with generational wealth on a massive scale and through this I was as overwhelmed as Rachel midway through the book.
At the same time, Kwan manages a to add depth this large cast of characters and the reader is able to look beyond the trappings of billionaire wealth and care what happens to not just Rachel and Nick but also Astrid, Colin, Araminta, etc. He also does a wonderful job imparting cultural and historical knowledge about Singapore bringing readers without an understanding of the area into the fold and making readers who are familiar with Singapore feel at home.
On the whole this book draws heavily from the classic tale of Cinderella, and it works very well. There is a reason some themes are done over and over and it's because they are classic. As I read the book, I found myself looking increasingly forward to seeing the movie. The descriptions and the landscapes in the book lend themselves to being on the big screen and the cast lines up so well with how I pictured the characters.
