House of Vampires and Exciting News for Me (Hopefully)

It was a dark and stormy night, and there I was scrolling Facebook or was it Twitter (RIP) when I was served several times with an ad for House of Vampires --a highly-rated vampire paranormal romance.  According the the ad, loads and loads of people apparently love this series and I would be missing out if I didn't download it and start reading ASAP.

The Algorihim knows me, how could I not give this series a try?  I made room on my KU shelf and added House of Vampires.  A couple of days later, I'd finished it and was on to the next book.  Here are some things you should know about this series.

If you like a young scrappy heroine who is down on her luck and open to trying new things, you'll like Lorena.  If you are looking for a book with a conclusion at the end, this is not it.  The book ends with all the plots wide open; however, the books in this series are short and there are fifteen books in the series. The book is told from Lorena's POV.  When you start to read this book, you may think that there is going to be a polyamorous relationship between Lorena and the Vampires, but that is quickly dispelled so if you come into the series looking for poly, you'll be disappointed--at least in the short term, maybe it chances?

I rate this book a 4. I wanted a Vampire story, that was an easy read, and this is, it's a real slow burn, not much happens in this book, but I'm thirsty for more.

Word in the school halls, is that they may have finally hired someone for the open Lunchroom Supervisor position. Keep your fingers crossed for me, we've been down a person since last Thanksgiving and we could really, really use the help! I hope you are having a great week! I'm going to get back to my reading now!

Writer and Narrator of his own Book- A mix of cozy mystery and fantasy: Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree

Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree was a February selection by Ben's Cozy Book Club. Alas, my library hold came up in March.  I listened to the audio version of this book, which is voiced by Travis Baldree, who in addition to being a writer is also an audiobook narrator!

For your information, I checked on whether this is the first book in a series.  According to Mr. Baldree, there will be at least one other book in this world, but he is writing the books so that they stand alone, which is nice. Legend & Lattes is the story of Viv, an Orc, who retires from fighting to pursue her dream of opening a coffee shop. Now, the thing is that no one in this city or country has ever had coffee before or visited a coffee shop. Coffee/Lattes/Scones don't exist here until Viv arrives. So that aspect adds to the story. Viv is also a stranger in a strange land and she has years of walls built up from her mercenary days. Hence, we are along for this new adventure as she begins a relationship with Tandi who is a succubus and an excellent barista. It's a lovely light Sapphic romance that grows alongside the main story about new beginnings and friendships. Of course, there is some trouble from Viv's past, what is a book without conflict, right?

Overall this book is fun, light fantasy that is a joy to experience and ends very satisfactorily.

4.5 stars

Miss Tilley Lives! The lastest book in the Lucy Stone Series!

Here we are, book number 28.  I had to wait until my turn to get this one from the local library. So I'm not alone in reading this series.  There are other Lucy Stone fans around me.

I was really happy to see that Miss Tilley, the oldest person in Tinker's Cove and possibly the world is still alive and kicking. Although she has had some health setbacks and is at an assisted living facility.  The reason for the murder is interesting, and there is a nice subplot about possible Medicare fraud. Lucy spends much of the book at the Assisted Living Facility so we meet some new people, but there's still time for breakfast at Jake's and scenes with Phyllis and Ted.

Sweet Zoe who was introduced as a baby in book one is now graduating from college and looking for her first apartment. In this book, she has taken over the title of the most annoying child. a title once held by all her older siblings in other books.

This was an enjoyable entry in the series. I liked the easter egg and bonnet talk and as always I enjoy Maine weather talk. I don't know how many more books there might be left in this series, but I hope there are a few more to come!

New Christmas Cozy Out Tomorrow! #MurderattheChristmasCookieBakeOff #NetGalley

Are you like me?  Do you love cozy mysteries and cookie bake-offs? If so, get this book ASAP!  This is the second book in Darci Hannah's Beacon Bakeshop series.  The setting is a small town on Lake Michigan. Lindsey is our overwhelmed bakery owner and amateur sleuth. Already in book two she has become known as a crime solver. There are nice twists and turns and a false ending--so if you think you know who the killer is, you might be right, or you might be wrong!

This book doesn't have an overwhelming number of characters, it's easy to follow the story without having read the first novel. There is no love triangle, wahoo!  This book has the perfect amount of Christmas coziness including a visitor from the North Pole. As the book goes on you can see the community of Beacon Harbor really embracing Lindsey as one of their own.

The cookies themselves were described in the most mouthwatering way, I was so thrilled to see that Darci Hannah has included all the preliminary and final cookie recipes in the back of this book! Because this book does work as a stand-alone and because it has so many cookie recipes in the back, it could be a really fun book to give with a cookie tray as a Christmas gift!

4.5 stars to Murder at the Christmas Cookie Bake-Off by Darci Hannah!

Thanks so much #NetGalley for the ARC of this book! All the opinions are my own! #MurderattheChristmasCookieBakeOff

Judging A Book By Its Cover #RubyRedHerring #NetGalley

Ruby Red Herring by Tracy Gardner is the first book in her new Avery Ayers Antique Mystery series.  I chose to pick up this book from NetGalley because I loved the cover. The title is also a perfectly punny cozy title!

Our Amateur sleuth is Avery Ayers. Avery and her sister live in the family home with their Aunt following the death of their parents in a car crash a year prior to the series beginning.  We quickly begin to wonder if the car crash was an accident or if foul play was involved.  Lilac Grove is a small suburb of New York City.  So we have the small-town setting where Avery and her family live, and then we also Manhattan where the family business is located.  The family business is an appraisal business that is focused on antiquities and artifacts, we find out the business has suffered since the deaths of William and Anne.  Things are now on the upswing due to a couple of contracts Avery's partner Sir Robert has acquired.

My only exposure to the world of appraising antiques and artifacts has been through watching Antiques Roadshow on PBS. Tracy Gardner explains the appraisal process in an interesting and easy-to-understand way. I like the variety of character ages in this book.  Avery is 25, her sister is a senior in high school, Aunt Midge is sixty, and the people who work with Avery at the museum span the decades from the late 20s to late 50s.  A nice mix of points of view.

Tracy Gardner does a very good job highlighting Avery's struggles with mental health after the deaths of her parents.  She is seeing a therapist and working on anger issues as well as grief, I appreciated that her pain and her struggle wasn't glossed over in pursue of the mystery plot.

4 Stars to this new cozy series, this one takes some liberties with the standard cozy tropes, and I'm always open to reading new twists on cozy mysteries!

I received an ARC of this book, it may change some when it is in final form.  All my opinions are mine!
